Adele E. Slowinski (née Kopczynski) passed away on March 20, 2026, at the age of 99, surrounded by her loving family at Edwards Hospital. A resident of Sunrise Naperville North, she was born on August 25, 1926, in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood to the late Adam and Lucille (née Rydwelski) Kopczynski.
Adele graduated from St. Rose of Lima Grammar School in 1940 and Gage Park High School in 1944, becoming the first in her family to earn a diploma—a source of great pride for her parents.
After graduating, Adele supported the war effort by working as a bookkeeper at Foote Brothers Gear and Machine Company, where she embraced her love of numbers. Following the war, she worked at Fidelity, M&H Laboratories, and Armour and Company in similar roles. She married Walter Slowinski on July 5, 1947, and together they shared nearly 50 years of marriage. She and Walter enjoyed the outdoors, regularly traveling on fishing trips with their family.
A loving and dedicated mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt, Adele raised six children. She was a proud longtime resident of Chicago’s Garfield Ridge neighborhood, where she lived and brought up her family for over 65 years. She was a parishioner of St. Daniel the Prophet Church, where all six of her children attended grammar school. After her children had grown, Adele returned to work at A&E Best Buy Liquors, Inc. on Archer Ave at New England Ave.
Adele was a beloved grandmother to 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. An adored member of her extended family, Adele always kept her door open for relatives to visit, converse, and reminisce. An avid gardener, she maintained a beautiful flower garden and bountiful vegetable garden. She especially enjoyed growing tomatoes, which she loved sharing with family. She was also an avid birdwatcher, keeping multiple feeders in her yard and relishing their daily visits.
A skilled and enthusiastic card player, Adele enjoyed games such as Euchre, Rummy, Two-Handed Solitaire, Crazy Eights, and Ding-a-Ling. In addition to cards, she also enjoyed board games such as Scrabble and Yahtzee.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Adam and Lucille; her sister, June (Frank) Dymbrowski; her husband, Walter J. Slowinski; and two of her sons, Bruce E. Slowinski and Walter M. Slowinski.
She is survived by her children: Donna Johnson; Jackie (Dave) Biener; Janet (Russell) Macejack; Raymond (Linda) Slowinski; and daughter-in-law Denise Slowinski. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Sarah (Jason), Matthew, Adam (Christina), Shaun, Brian, Lisa (Dave), Andrew (Janessa), Nathan (Jade), Tim (Kelsey), Alyssa (Bill), Nicholas, Christopher, and
Thomas; and her great-grandchildren: Connor, Caleb, Hadley, William, Aleczander, Ella, Shaun, Barrett, Paige, Noah, Elai, Samurai, and Henry.
Adele will be fondly remembered for her dry sense of humor, love of chocolate and anything sweet (especially mini éclairs), impeccable memory, and unwavering devotion to her family.
