Anna Kirschner, a longtime and well-known resident of Coronado, died peacefully in her home of over 50 years on Thursday, November 11, 2021. She was 90 years young at the time of her passing and was surrounded by her loving children, Barbara Kirschner Sosnowski and F. Curt Kirschner, Jr.
Anna was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on February 18, 1931. After turning 18, she quickly made her way to the San Diego area and never left. She met the love of her life, Fred Kirschner, in San Diego in 1952. They married on June 1, 1957 and remained married for 46 years, until Fred’s too-early death (also at their home) in 2003.
Anna and Fred started their life together in San Diego. After having their two children, Anna and Fred moved to their home in Coronado in 1965. In that home, Anna and Fred not only raised Barbara and Curt but also provided a supportive informal clubhouse for their children’s and grandchildren’s many friends. Her fervent (and fulfilled) wish was to remain in Coronado and in her home throughout her life. Anna loved her husband, family, home, Coronado, and cats, and not always in that order.
Anna was an energetic resident of Coronado for the last fifty years. She volunteered as the librarian at Barbara and Curt’s elementary school, Sacred Heart. She also worked for several years at the Hotel del Coronado after Barbara and Curt left for college.
Anna and Fred were extremely active in and longstanding supporters of the Coronado Yacht Club and the Jr. sailing program. While Anna left the sailing to Fred, Anna could be found organizing events, dinners, and all manner of details at the club. Over the last several years, Anna was extremely proud to be Member #1 of the CYC, signifying the club’s longest standing member.
Anna participated in all manner of civic and political events in Coronado, particularly after Fred’s passing. She was a steadfast supporter of the Coronado Hospital Foundation, Sacred Heart Church, and the Coronado Chamber of Commerce. In 2007, Anna was awarded the Chamber’s prestigious Lewis R. Hardy, Jr. Memorial Award, which is given to an individual who has, over the years, shown exceptional integrity in business and civic issues and who has selflessly promoted the community. Anna was extremely proud of that recognition.
In her later years, Anna could be found throughout the town, driving her car, riding her scooter, and then using her walker, festooned with flags and her stuffed animals. She loved the comradery and friendships that she had with so many in this town.
Anna is survived by her children; Barbara’s husband, Ron Sosnowski; Curt’s husband, Nick Augustinos; two grandchildren, Alec Sosnowski of Denver, Colorado, and Maggie Sosnowski, currently residing in New Zealand; and Alec’s wife, Annie Anzalone, and their two children, Milo and Maya Sosnowski.
A memorial service is being planned to coincide with Anna’s 91st birthday in February 2022. Further information about that service will be provided.
