She was born in Calexico , CA to Ysaura and Manuel Abril. She is survived by her younger sister Alice Kochackis of Chula Vista, CA. She was preceded in death by three siblings- Elena, Rafaelita and Eduardo-and her parents.
She was raised in Calexico, CA where she attended elementary, middle and high school. During school she had many perfect attendance awards. While attending Calexico High School she met her sweetheart of her life –Israel Cosio. Several years later they married on October 26, 1952. In December of 1954 their first child was born, Manuel Edward Cosio, while Israel was in the United States Air force. Esther stayed in Calexico while Israel was stationed in several locations- Florida, Mississippi and Wisconsin. In 1955 Esther and Israel adopted Norma. In November 1957 Rebecca Louise was also born in Calexico, CA.
They then relocated to Los Angeles, Ca before finally moving to their house in Chula Vista, CA. Esther worked hard whether at home or work. She was employed as an Accountant at Dairy Mart Farms in San Ysidro for about 17 years. When the dairy closed she moved onto Mission Valley with her boss continuing her work there for several more years and then retired. She then did her hardest work, bringing up Eddie, Becky and Norma. At one time she had her grandmother and mother living at the same residence in Chula Vista.
Esther was predeceased by her husband Israel in 2009, her daughter Becky in 2011 and her grandson Michael in 2007.
Esther is survived by her children, Eddie and Norma. Norma’s son Armando and wife (Megan) are expecting her first great-grandchild in April. Eddie and his wife (Cathy) gave Esther three grandchildren –Izzy, Andres and Briana. Becky and her husband (Cody) added two grandchildren- Danny and Cody,Jr. All of the grand children at one time or another spent many hours under the watchful eye of grandma and grandpa and had much fun growing up at their house.
Holidays were an important part with the grandparents. During Easter the annual smashing of confetti eggs included Grandma Esther and led to confetti getting into places you didn’t think it could get in. During one Easter Grandma was playing wiffle ball and while running out a hit stepped into a gopher hole and hit face first into the ground knocking her out and giving her a nice black eye. At Thanksgiving there was lots of food to go around and mom’s candied yams to this date have been unmatched. Around Christmas time Mom always got the families together to pitch in to make tamales. The deal- if you didn’t help, no tamales. Mom was a very good cook. She was a very warm hearted, kind and gracious woman.
During her last two years she resided at a 24 hour private homecare- ERachel House- because of her dementia and Parkinson’s. The care and love displayed daily by Babs and Efrem showed their true care for mom. The family appreciates all you did for her as well as the other caretakers. You became part of our family.
