May 22, 1917 – Nov. 1, 2012
Longtime Chula Vista resident, Frances Reeves, 95, peacefully passed away at the Fredericka Manor Care Center on the morning of November 1. Frances was born in Boston Massachusetts on May 22, 1917. She graduated from Arlington High and worked at her first job as a librarian for the Arlington Public Library. Frances met her husband Robert E. Reeves, (who preceded her in death in 1977) when she was a volunteer for the USO. She met the young Naval Lieutenant at a dance onboard ship in Boston Harbor. They were engaged and then married after the war on March 2, 1946 in Arlington, Mass. They settled in Webster Groves, Missouri where Bob found a job teaching high school and where he built them a family home by himself from the ground up.
They moved to Chula Vista in 1953 where Frances worked as a children’s librarian for the Chula Vista Public library and as the librarian assistant at Hilltop Junior High. She walked to and from her part time job every day keeping her healthy and fit. Her husband Robert became an instructor at Southwestern College where Frances was active with the Faculty Wives. They both loved living and raising their children in Chula Vista.
Frances loved family, friends and community and was loved back. Her sister Eleanor of Chula Vista; her son Brian Reeves of Diamond Springs, and daughter Allison Reeves of Iowa City, Iowa; her grandson Aaron Reeves, and great-grandsons Ryan and Caden survive her. She was always supportive of her children and was very proud of her grandson and his success in business. Frances was thrilled to meet great-grandsons Ryan and Caden and enjoyed several visits with them.
Frances was a member of the Chula Vista Women’s club for over 25 years and served as President of the Chula Vista Friends of the Library. Frances was a volunteer in the schools and for many organizations over the years. Enjoying a full life in retirement, Frances traveled the world and visited her children and her family on the East Coast. She lived at Fredericka Manor in the Independent Housing for 6 years where she helped host the teas for prospective members and was on the Board of Directors of the Care Center where she later was a resident.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, December 7, at 3:00 PM at the Community Congregational Church, 276 F Street in Chula Vista. Donations in Frances Reeves’ name may be made to the Chula Vista Women’s Club Scholarship fund c/o Ann Peacock, 3533 Lomacitas Lane, Bonita, 91902.
