Gloria Garcia Rios, 80, of San Diego, California, transitioned peacefully on October 6, 2026, at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and dear family members, Gloria will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother, a compassionate wife, and a woman of generous spirit, faith, and devotion.
Gloria was born on October 9, 1945, in El Barrio de la Purísima, Aguascalientes, Mexico to her parents Petra Cruz González and Bartolo Prieto García. As an infant, she moved with her mother and eight siblings to Tijuana, Baja California, where she grew up helping customers at her mother’s curios store on Avenida Revolución from as young as 5 years old, while her father worked in the United States.
In 1961, Gloria immigrated with her mother and some siblings to the United States, settling in San Ysidro, California, where she attended day and night school to improve her English. In 1963, she met Carlos Rios, her future husband, at San Diego City College while both were enrolled in an employment workshop.
Gloria was a hard worker. She began working at an electrical manufacturing plant in 1965, earning $1.25 an hour. By 1968, she had been named “lead girl” and doubled her wages—an achievement she regarded with pride. In 1969, she purchased her first car, another milestone that reflected her determination and independence.
Gloria and Carlos married in April 1971 and shared 50 years together until Carlos’ own passing on November 29, 2021. Throughout her life, Gloria cared for dozens of children, earning a caretaker certificate in 1999 and continuing this work to support her family. She loved watching the children in her care grow and thrive. Later in life she pursued child development courses to continue her own educational growth.
After surviving stage 4 uterine cancer in 2004, Gloria deepened her faith in God, family, and cherished friendships. She expressed how prayer and her faith were fundamental to her survival.
For nearly a decade, Gloria provided Carlos with compassionate care after his dementia diagnosis, allowing him to remain at home until his peaceful transition. She often surmised she had survived her first bout with cancer to be present for Carlos. It was a pledge that she took on with loving resolve, that Carlos was to enjoy a dignified life no matter the circumstances.
As a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in San Ysidro, Gloria served through the Social Service Ministry and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, where she held roles of treasurer, secretary, and spiritual counselor. Through her volunteer work, she helped feed and house migrant and indigent families, advocate for vulnerable community members, and deliver humanitarian aid to shelters in Tijuana. Gloria was instrumental in the success of the tiendita at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, which raised funds to support the community members in need.
Gloria loved her garden, sharing the knowledge about her plants with others and especially nurturing her rose bushes. The prominence of the roses was synonymous with her name. Gloria’s garden became a beacon of health and emblematic of her caring nature.
She loved to knit. She knitted outfits and blankets for her grandchildren, and even a hat to cover her head when she was undergoing chemotherapy. Gloria enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She valued her conversations with them, attending their school events, sharing family stories with them, and offering helpful guidance.
Gloria was a true matriarch for her family. She brought extended family together for holidays, always welcoming and offering a seat at her table. She loved her siblings and always spoke of them with respect and reverence, recalling their youthful years, their challenges, and how they supported each other throughout their lives.
Gloria’s grace, kindness, and loving spirit will leave an enduring impression on all who knew her.
Gloria is survived by her four children and their families: Carlos, Heather, and Xavier; Pedro, Angelica, Teotzin, and Joaquín; Gabriela, Hector, Nayeli, and Antonio; and Fernanda, Enrique, Metzli, and Ollin. She also leaves behind extended family in San Diego and throughout Southern California, and in Tijuana and Mexicali, Baja California, and Aguascalientes, Mexico.
