Pastor, Hayden Cates, born October 2, 1926 passed away on October 15, 2012. Hayden is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Maxine Cates. He is survived by 2 sons, John and Don ; daughter-in-laws, Mary and Arna ; 5 grandchildren; Benjamin, Timothy, Daniel, Aaron and Jeremiah and 4 great grandchildren.
Hayden was one of 10 children born to Hayden and Maude Cates. He was born in Pittsburg Oklahoma. At the age of 16, he moved with his family to northern California. Having a passion to become a cowboy, wanting to work on a cattle ranch, he went to Montana only to be disappointed that there were no cattle ranches. He caught a freight train and rode down to Texas. He got a job, working at the Matador Ranch.
He had a near death experience of a horse fallen on top of him. Shortly he returned back home to northern California .
After returning home, Hayden accepted Christ in his heart at his mother's church. It was at that point he felt the calling to the ministry. His younger sister was leaving for bible college and asked Hayden to go with her. It was at Glad Tidings Bible College in San Francisco that he met a beautiful curly red hair girl, Maxine. Hayden and Maxine was married on June 19, 1948.
Hayden and Maxine moved to Imperial Beach, Ca. He became the pastor of First Assembly of God of Imperial Beach. Hayden, his wife and church members built a new church in 1956. He delivered his last sermon and retired after more than 60 years of ministry.
