Mike was born on August 8, 1953 in Mobile, Alabama; as the child of a military family, he called many places home throughout his childhood and early teens. The one constant in his life was his cousin and life-long friend, Bev. Mike, his mother, and brother Daryl eventually settled in San Diego, CA. During his earlier years there, Mike was married for a short time to Sharon McDermott, and had a son, Michael Jr.
While working as an Emergency Medical Technician, Mike met and fell in love with Patti Gordon. They were married on June 4 (and celebrated their 30th anniversary this year). Mike went on to pursue and graduate from Paramedic school. These were the happiest years for him; he loved this work and was a respected leader in the field. He mentored and trained other paramedics, and earned several distinguished awards for his passion and dedication. Later in life he pursued other professional fields, such as law enforcement and private security.
Mike had many talents and interests, always looking for new ways to engage with the world around him. He was a skilled photographer, and worked with the local fire department to get behind-the lines at fire scenes, capturing dynamic and forceful images. Mike was also a talented guitarist who enjoyed all genres of music. But above all, he had an absolute love and admiration for the Beatles.
Mike was a Boss Hog. He tinkered for countless hours on his cherished Harley, but was happiest when he was riding. Mike and Patti shared many wonderful miles and adventures together on the motorcycle.
Mike had a tender and caring heart that he hid behind a sardonic wit. He particularly had a soft spot for animals, and treated his dogs like children; his most beloved “kid” was a goose. Mike’s soft soul, gruff humor, and unique way of looking at the world will be greatly missed.
Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Wilma Gossett Hayner; 2 brothers, Jerry and Daryl. He is survived by wife, Patti; son, Michael Jr.; two grandchildren, and a cousin, Bev Watkins.
