A devoted family man, scientific calling, and deep love for Ensenada
With deep sorrow, the family of William W. Hatton announces his passing on January 31, 2026, at the age of 91.
William was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and raised in Lima, Ohio, the son of an English father and an American-German mother. Throughout his life, he was known for his integrity, sense of responsibility, perseverance, warm personality, and constant good humor. He leaves behind a legacy of dignity, strength, and joy for all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In 1958, he arrived in the city of Ensenada, where he worked as a marine technician for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Through his dedication and professional excellence, the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission established an office in the city to support his work. His contributions played a significant role in the scientific study of sardines and tuna, leaving a meaningful mark in the field. During the 1970s, his career led him to live in Puerto Rico with his wife and children.
He was a man of lifelong friendships, always willing to help and serve others. He loved coffee and found a special place at the Starbucks Café on Boulevard Costero, where he formed cherished friendships that he considered part of his extended family.
He is survived by his wife, Sofía Pérez Garzón; his children, William, Leslie, Heidi, and Becky Hatton Pérez; his daughter-in-law, Lynneth Siqueiros; his sons-in-law, Aaron Cantor and Robert Wood; and his grandchildren, Daniel, Sara Abigail Salazar Hatton, Mason, and Mia Cantor, as well as many relatives and friends who deeply mourn his passing.
The family finds comfort in their faith, trusting that he now rests peacefully in the presence of God.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.”
Psalm 23:1–3
The family sincerely thanks everyone for the expressions of love and prayers received.
