Josephine was a long time resident of the Rosevile / Sacramento area after her retirement in Southern California.
Josephine Stevens was born April 9,1924 in Cleveland Ohio to parents Frank and Carmella Onorio who both emigrated from Italy. Jo was preceded in death by her husband Dwight Stevens. Also preceding her were her brothers, Anthony Onorio, Carl Onorio and sister Frances Pergl. Her surviving sister Grace Marik lives in Ohio. She is survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and their children and grandchildren.
Jo was devoted to her family, friends, neighbors, church, and her many pets. Proud of her Italian heritage she loved to travel and enjoyed sharing many vacations with her family and friends. Jo had a tight knit bond with her neighbors in Wood Bridge Ranch, where they shared morning walks, dining and many journeys. She also loved to entertain, and her home was filled with comfort and laughter at gatherings and holiday dinners with family, friends, and members of her church.
Jo accomplished a distinguished groundbreaking career in the Los Angeles Police Department spanning more than 20 years.
She joined the department after moving with family to California in the 1940's. Following an equality lawsuit she helped to initiate prior to her retirement, women who are no longer excluded from promotion to the rank of lieutenant or higher.
Josephine was the center of her family and always led by her love, strength, kindness, character, and generosity. Her lifetime of support and inspiration was displayed by her love for those who had the pleasure to know her. She will be greatly missed by all, but never forgotten in the fond memories she has left with us. She will rest with her brother, Carl Onorio in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery in the Los Angeles area.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be sent to St. Clare Catholic Church (address above)
