Cesar Toyhacao Cabig – Born October 16, 1924 in Leyte, Philippines. Son to Mayor Hermenegildo and Fortunata Cabig, and brother to eight siblings. Beloved husband to the late Mila Cabig, and father to Genny, Lisa and Cesar Jr. Cesar, affectionately known as “Poppy,” is adored grandfather to Inday, Nina, Sasi, and Chito, and great grandfather to Cisco, Diahlo, Ignacio IV, Angelo, Ilonzo, Aysia, Camryn, Emiliano, Brice and Chito, Jr.
Cesar spent his childhood in Hinunangan, a province of Leyte, Philippines. During World War II, Cesar led Filipino revolutionists to fight alongside American Forces, during the notable Battle of Leyte. Shortly thereafter Cesar joined the US Coastguard. He was trained in radio operator-mechanics, learning international Morse code. Cesar sailed throughout the world, but little did he know that his sailing days were over while moored in San Francisco. While in San Francisco, Cesar met and fell in love with Mila – he never returned to his ship. Cesar and Mila married in 1952, and had three children. Cesar returned to school, studying engineering, all while working full time to support his family. Cesar eventually took on a long-term career as a printing pressman with Somerville Printing, where he dedicated 40 years of service. As planned, in the late 80’s, Cesar and Mila said goodbye to San Francisco to live out their retirement in the Philippines.
Cesar will be remembered for his dedication and commitment to his family, and the countless sacrifices made to ensure his loved ones were always content. Although Cesar will be deeply missed, those closest to him take comfort in knowing he has joined Mila in eternal life and happiness. We love you dad/poppy.
