She was born on January 20, 1929 in Dawson, Texas to William Ferris Cottongame and Maude Stringer Cottongame.
Marie was a woman who lived by the words of her Lord and who taught her children to live a Godly life. After graduating from Frost High she married the love of her life Gilbert Chaney on June 17, 1947. Together they raised 2 sons Greg and Gary who grew up right. She taught them not to be afraid to pray for others and how to find the good in almost anybody. It took Marie the total of 5 minutes to get to know a person, as she never met a stranger. She would welcome anybody with open arms and food. Her gift of gab made her a natural caregiver, always caring for family and friends. She was a cool-tempered woman who ultimately wound up being everyone’s favorite grandma whether they were related or not. Other than devoting her life to God and family she enjoyed gardening, doing yardwork, and cooking for everyone (especially those chocolate pies). Her kindness and compassion were an inspiration to all who loved her and the lessons she taught will be passed on for generations to come.
Marie is survived by her loving husband Gilbert Chaney of Colorado City, by her 2 sons Greg Chaney and wife Nancy and Gary Chaney and wife Deborah both of Colorado City, as well as by her grandchildren Morris Chaney, Alva Chaney, Angela Vangundy, and Jessica Chambliss, by 15 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren with another great-great grandchild on the way. Also surviving is a sister Ethel Dunagan of Colorado City, a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, by brothers Leslie Cottongame and Robert Cottongame, and by sisters Ela Hoffman, Lucille Poulter, and Dorothy Hyles.
A funeral service for Marie will be held in the Kiker Seale Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, March 18th at 1pm with Tip Chaney officiating, burial will follow in the Colorado City Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 11 am until the time of the service.
