He was born on October 2, 1927, to J.D. and Mary Horn Chaney in Blooming Grove, Texas.
Gilbert was a good Christian man who put his faith and family above all else. He was the leader of his family in so many ways, not just in his home but for his extended family as well. He and his wife of 73 years Marie had an inseparable bond and a relationship like no other, hardly ever arguing and finding new ways to renew their love for each other every day. He was no stranger to hard-days’ work, always keeping busy and raising his boys to be the same way. He believed the best policy in life was to be kind to others and always tell the truth, even if it isn’t what others wanted to hear.
Gilbert lived his life to give to others and to serve others, often helping people when they needed it the most and never asking for anything in return. If a family member needed a place to stay, he would move them close to him so that he could take care of them, even if they lived halfway across the country. In his spare time he enjoyed being outside helping his wife in the garden, tending to his yard or finding something to keep him busy. He also enjoyed spending time with his sons and spending time with countless family members. The lessons of strong faith in God and hard work that he taught to his family will continue to be passed on for generations to come.
Gilbert is survived by his sons Gary Chaney and wife Deborah and Greg Chaney and wife Nancy both of Colorado City, and by grandchildren Morris Chaney, Alva Chaney, Angela Vangundy, and Jessica Chambliss as well as by several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother Floyd Chaney of Grandbury and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Jake D. and Mary Chaney, by his wife Annie Marie Chaney, and by his siblings James Chaney, J.D. Chaney, Mae Montague, Evelyn Trant, and Margaret Robinson.
A Celebration of Gilbert’s Life will be held in the Colorado City Cemetery on Thursday, May 1st at 1pm.
