
He was born to William ”Bill” and Hattie Slater of Roscoe Texas on December 13, 1931. He graduated from Roscoe High School and attended Tarleton State College. He then joined the Air Force and was stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa Florida. While in the military he met and married the love of his life Evelyn Selena Cone, he made the rank of Staff Sergeant, while serving during the Korean War. They married on Saturday, December 13, 1952 at Ballast Point Baptist Church in Tampa Florida.
Doc and Evelyn moved back to Roscoe, Texas where he had his TV repair shop.
Doc then went to work at TXU in Colorado City, Texas, which soon became his home. He loved photography and even had a dark room to develop his pictures. He spent many years working at the Circle 6 Ranch in Stanton and with the Campers on Mission after he retired. He was a proud member of the First Baptist Church in Colorado City and for many years was a Deacon and in charge of the T.V. Ministry. He loved watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and he loved a good steak. He would often ask Nathan when he was going to cook more steaks!
Doc is survived by a son and daughter in law JD and Pam Slater of Fort Worth, by a daughter and son-in-law Rhonda and Steve Roark of Colorado City, by grandchildren Colby and wife Jody Slater of Abilene, Dylan Slater, Nathan Slater and wife Stacey, and Kayla Luera and husband Richard all of Colorado City, Kristin and Amanda Murrary of Fort Worth. Also surviving are his great-grandchildren Ayden and Paxton Slater of Colorado City, Jessica Slater of Abilene, Richard, Nikolai, and Liam Luera of Colorado City, and Addie Rose Murrary of Fort Worth, and by Brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ron and Carole Kulesco of Athens Alabama, as well as by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents William and Hattie Slater, by his loving wife Evelyn Slater, brother Cecil Slater, by a daughter Linda and her husband Doug Flatley, and by a great-granddaughter Linda Michelle Luera.
A memorial service for Doc will be held on Monday, June 14th at 2pm in the First Baptist Church of Colorado City with Doctor Jerry Shields officiating.
In lieu of flowers he would like donations in his memory made to the First Baptist Church of Colorado City, the Circle 6 Baptist Camp in Stanton, or a charity of your choice.
