Rene is survived by his wife, Rose Holguin; daughters, Jennifer Diane Holguin and Patricia Ann Holguin Settle; and grandchildren, Emily Elizabeth Settle, Christian Arthur Holguin, Sarah Catherine Settle, Brandon Rene Holguin, granddaughter-in-law Kelsey Holguin, and great granddaughter on the way, Leah Holguin; his sister Maria Blanca Crutcher and brother Jimmy Holguin.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Raul and Hope Holguin; and his siblings, Raul Holguin Jr, Elia Holguin Larson, Joe Holguin, Irma Holguin Alderete, Irene Holguin Reyna, Lydia Holguin Shane, and Arthur Holguin.
Rene Holguin was a hard worker with strong hands like his father before him. He strived to put every ounce of his being into giving 110% for the love of his work and for the care of his family. At only 10 years old, he got his first job flipping burgers. He gave all his earnings to his mother and only requested store-bought underwear in return. He swept and washed dishes at 12 years old. He worked as a meatcutter and meat market manager for 40 years. He became the first Hispanic meat market manager at Safeway. He worked all his life while never failing to return home to his family. Even post-retirement he just couldn’t sit still. He became known around Colorado City for lifting heavy metal and hauling it off to Snyder with his dear friends, Kenny and Chito.
Our Papoo loved people and was well loved. He had this beautiful spirit that drew people to him. He spoiled his grandchildren rotten. He gave more hugs, kisses, toys, donuts, snow cones and candy than you can imagine. He was always there when you needed to talk to him and to impart wisdom. He also loved sweets. He loved sweets more than food. Every day had to start with a donut and a cup of coffee and had to end with a glass of milk with cake and Blue Bell ice cream. He was the happiest and most loving man we have ever known; and we miss him deeply. We love you always, Papoo.
A celebration of life for Rene will be held Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at 3:00 PM at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home, 338 Locust St, Colorado City, Texas 79512.
