COLUMBIA - Annie Newman Matthews went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, October 1, 2016 after a brief illness. Born in Florence on March 15, 1926, she was the daughter of the late James E. Newman and Dessie Lee Newman and the widow of Dr. Fletcher Boyd Matthews. Annie is survived by her three sons, William Matthews of Columbia, James Matthews (Kay) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Richard Matthews (Yvonne) of Greenville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 1301 Richland St, Columbia, SC 29201. A funeral service to celebrate Annie’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery.
