

COLUMBIA – Archie Ernest Zeigler, of Columbia, 100, went home to be with the Lord on January 26, 2021. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 1, 2021 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Rosa Broome Zeigler as well as six brothers and sisters. He leaves behind two children, Emily Royal and Archie Allen Zeigler, both of Columbia. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, David Israel Royal and wife Christy of Georgia, Judah Gentry Royal and wife Sharla of Alabama, Hannah Ruth Wheeler and husband Jason of Georgia, John Emmanuel Royal of Georgia, and Amy Victoria Urrutia and husband C.J. of Georgia as well as 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. and Mrs. Zeigler were long time members of Park Street Baptist Church of Columbia as well as North Star Baptist Church for some time. He spent many years at Park Street teaching the ten-year-old boys Sunday School Class and will be remembered by many for their much-loved fishing trips.
Mr. Zeigler attended Clemson Agriculture and Military College as a cadet, and was a senior when America entered World War II. Upon graduating he went straight into the Army where he served his nation proudly in France and North Africa until the time he was wounded in France. He is an honored recipient of the Purple Heart. He went on to publish the story of his time in World War II calling his book “My War Story”.
After the war he returned to Columbia to work for his father at Mechanics Contracting Company and worked his way up to a full partner position where he worked for the remainder of his career. The company built many buildings and churches in the Columbia area.
He was a lifelong avid fisherman, loved to read, especially about history, but above all cherished God and his family. He will be sorely missed by many and his memory will live on in our hearts forever.
