

COLUMBIA Funeral service for Billy Thomas Grubbs, 88, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2016, at Southside Baptist Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mr. Grubbs died Monday, April 18, 2016. Born in Camden, he was the son of the late James Thomas and Lucille Olivia Dixon Grubbs. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving aboard the USS Wisconsin BB64. A graduate of Columbia High School, he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of S.C. in 1950. He worked for General Electric, Pacific Mills, Columbia Supply and retired from W.P. Law. He was a lifelong member of Southside Baptist Church where he directed and sang in the choir and was a deacon and Sunday School teacher. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Jessie Johnson Grubbs; sons, Tom Grubbs (Donna) of Columbia, Jim Grubbs (Ann) of Lexington, Wayne Grubbs (Janet) of Lexington; grandchildren, Melissa Warren (R.J.), Laura Carson (David), Juliana Grubbs, Katie Price (Macky), Aaron Grubbs (Erin), Jackie Hunneycutt (Matthew); 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Sue Poole of Gaithersburg, Md.
