COLUMBIA - Bryan Hyman Bluestein passed away quietly the morning of September 11, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. He was 54. After graduating from Cardinal Newman High School, Bryan received his B.A. from the University of Georgia, where he was a letterman in swimming and graduated with a degree in business. Later, he received a J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law. For most of his adult life, Bryan, also known as “Blue” to friends and family, ran the eponymous store, Bluestein’s, which has been located in the Vista since 1959. Through the store, Bryan built relationships with customers across the state that went far beyond the mere sales of goods. Bryan was an athlete at heart – an avid golfer, runner and fanatic of all things Georgia Bulldogs. He was also an adventurous soul, who had traveled the world. Spain was his favorite destination, and he reveled in introducing his family and friends to new places. He is survived by his wife, Marti Miles Bluestein; his children, Kinsey, Sydney, and Reece, who were his greatest joys in life; his mother, Estelle Bluestein; and his sister, Barbra Dreesen. A celebration of his life will be held on September 12, 2014, at 4:00 p.m. in the Richland Room of the Columbia Convention Center. Burial will be private in Elmwood Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the local provider of USA Swimming’s Make a Splash Program, a charity that works to develop basic swim skills of underprivileged youth. Donations may be sent to: Carolina Aquatics, P.O. Box 5592, Columbia, SC 29250; in your memo line, please note: Make A Splash Swim School – For Blue.
