Charlie Appleby, an amazing husband, brother, father, and friend passed away August 12, 2024, from lung cancer. He was born November 8, 1951, in the charming town of Georgetown, SC, and was raised with pride in Florence, SC. From the very beginning, his journey was marked by a spirit of dedication and excellence. He attended Florence public schools, graduated from McClenaghan High School, and furthered his education at the University of South Carolina. There, he earned his BS from the School of Business Administration and continued to build his professional credentials with studies at SC Banker’s School and Stonier Graduate School of Banking.
Charlie’s accomplishments were not confined to his professional life. His journey began with a commitment to excellence in scouting, where he achieved the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout and was honored as a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. His time as a counselor at Camp Coker was not just a role but a passion, as he dedicated himself to nurturing the love of scouting in the young people who came through.
At the University of South Carolina, Charlie was a proud member of the Mighty Sound of the Southeast, the University’s renowned marching band. Some of his fondest memories were of playing with the Pep Band at basketball games. His college years were also marked by lifelong friendships formed through Sigma Phi Epsilon and Phi Mu Alpha Fraternities. During this period, he continued the family tradition of public service, becoming the third generation in his family to serve as a page in the SC Legislature.
Charlie's professional career spanned over forty years, marked by significant roles at C&S Bank, NBSC, and the Development Department at USC. Together with his beloved wife, Pam, he built lasting friendships with many donors, contributing to the academic excellence of the university.
Charlie’s commitment to his community was evident through his active participation in civic organizations. He was a valued member of the Sumter Lions Club and the Columbia Five Points Rotary Club, serving on the Board of Directors for both. His leadership extended to the Sumter County Council and as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Jobs Economic Development Authority.
Charlie’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. At Kathwood Baptist Church, he was elected Chairman of the Deacons and the Personnel Committee. He later served as an Elder and Chairman of the Finance and Administration Ministry at Forest Lake Presbyterian.
Charlie’s family was everything to him. He and Pam, who first met in college, shared a deep love for the water, spending countless hours boating and embarking on adventurous trips from Santee to Charleston. Their recent love for taking cruises, particularly their cherished visit to Hawaii, brought them immense joy. With his son, Charles, Charlie never missed an opportunity to show his love and support from his youngest years to the present. He was immensely proud of him, telling him so often.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Pam, and their son, Charles IV (Katy Bair). Charlie also leaves behind his sister, Jean Appleby Johnson (Charlie) of Maine, his nephews, Stephen Jackson (Nicole), Will Jackson (Melissa), Gary Knight (Andrea), and niece Chrissy Harvin (Johnny).
