

Dan proudly served his country with distinction in both the United States Army and Navy. Enlisting in 1968, he joined Company D (Ranger) 1/151 Infantry and was deployed to Vietnam during the Phase VI Counteroffensive and the 69 Tet-Counteroffensive. Dan's courageous service earned him numerous accolades, including the Bronze Star with V device, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Ribbon, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. After completing his Army service, Dan continued his military career by enlisting in the United States Navy, where he served until his honorable discharge in 1975.
In addition to his military service, Dan dedicated a portion of his life to law enforcement, serving with the Folly Beach Police Department for many years, where he made lasting contributions to his community.
In 2002, Dan met his wife, Diane, and they were married in 2003. They shared 23 wonderful years together, creating a lifetime of memories. Dan's devotion to his family was unwavering, and he was deeply proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Diane Hughes; children: Daniel Lee (Melissa) Hughes II, Thomas (Melody) Hughes, Amy (Marty) Padgett, Daniel Cunningham (Nedra) Hughes, Heather (Tim) Wood and Angela (Casey) Grant; as well as 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Dan was predeceased by his parents, his three brothers, Steve, Jimmy and Bobby, and his granddaughter, Shelby.
Beyond his family and military service, Dan had a passion for woodworking and fishing. These hobbies brought him peace and joy, and he loved spending time outdoors, often with his family by his side. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Dan cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. He also found great purpose in giving back to the military community, reflecting the same selflessness and dedication he exhibited throughout his life.
The family will be holding a service to honor Dan's life on September 29th, 2025. Visitation will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home, 3926 Devine Street Columbia SC 29205, from 10:30am-11:30am and a memorial service from 11:30am-12:15pm. Graveside service will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 1pm. Flowers can be sent to Dunbar Funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a veterans’ charity of your choice in his memory.
Dan’s memory will live on through the countless lives he touched. He will be remembered as a man of service, love, and unwavering commitment to his family and country.
