Delora F Sawyer

COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Delora “Miss Chick” Fant Sawyer, 87, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Oakview Cemetery in Salley, SC. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. There will be a gathering for friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at the Mouse Trap Restaurant, Columbia, SC.

Mrs. Sawyer died Saturday, March 24, 2018. Born in Newberry, SC, she was a daughter of the late Perry Metts Fant and Eugenia Wheeler Fant. She attended Columbia College and Newberry College. As an avid lover of the shag, the official South Carolina state dance, she was among the founding members of the Columbia Shag Club. She was a member of the shaggers Living Legends Association; an inductee into the South Carolina Shaggers Hall of Fame; a lifetime member of the Society of Stranders, a national shagdance organization; and a Shagging Icon recipient, the ultimate accolade awarded by the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs. She was also a member of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church.

Surviving are her son, Phil H. Sawyer, Jr. of Columbia, SC; her daughter, Dell Martin (Don) of Gilbert, SC; two nieces, Susie Lesesne (Jimmy) and Sally Pearson (Frank); and one nephew, Perry M. Fant, III (Cheryl).

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Phil Huff Sawyer and brother, Perry M. Fant, Jr.
