COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Delores Ann Wallace Lee, 92, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, January 31, 2025 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:15 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. There will also be a reception following the burial at The House, 2712 Lee Street, Columbia, SC 29205.
Mrs. Lee died Saturday, January 25, 2025 surrounded by family. Born in Florence, she was a daughter of the late George Gary and Daisy Marie Stewart Wallace. She was President of the State Newspaper Credit Union and was a member of Incarnation Lutheran Church.
Delores had a thirst for life that was contagious. She never missed an opportunity to travel the world, spreading stories of her trips to her family, and bringing beautiful and unique souvenirs back home from every destination. Her voice had a melodic sound that could be heard reading aloud in church, singing hymns of worship or for fun, and speaking words of wisdom.
Like a quintessential southern lady, she had many life philosophies that included but were not limited to: “if you have something to say, speak up so you can hear every word,” “stand up tall, and always look your best when you leave the house,” and of course, “where's my lipstick?”
Delores volunteered at the SC State Fair for many years and one of her greatest memories is being featured as the Honored Guest of the SC State Fair in 2022 for never missing a fair during her lifetime, reliving her glory days of winning many ribbons for her baking prowess.
Her son and daughter were the joys of her life. Cruising with her “Ricky” was a treasured tradition, once taking five cruises in one season.
Delores’ beloved daughter and namesake, Deedie, was the apple of her eye and where one was, the other typically followed. Deedie vows to carry on her mother’s legacy as the matriarch with the same subtle grace and elegance.
Surviving her are her son, Richard M. Lee Jr. of West Columbia; daughter, Deedie Jordan (Danny) of Columbia; four grandsons, Hampton Jordan (Rebecca), Richard Jordan (Chad), Brett Lee Stuart Lee; and four great-granddaughters.
She was predeceased by her husband Richard Murray Lee Sr.; brother, George Gary Wallace; and sister, Uldine Wallace Hatchell.
The family wishes to thank all the caregivers, but especially Irene Sumpter who became like a member of the family.
Memorials may be made to The Citadel Foundation in honor of Daniel Hampton Jordan III and Richard Blanton Jordan.
