

COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Frances Horton Oxley, 95, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 18, 2016, at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Mike Smith will officiate the service. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 17, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mrs. Oxley, widow of Robert Stephen Oxley, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at White Oak Manor. Born May 11, 1921 in Mountville, S.C., she was one of nine children born to the late Robert Simeon and Bessie Irene Davis Horton. She worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Jacksonville, Fla. and in Columbia, retiring in 1981. Mrs. Oxley was a long-time active and devoted member of Trenholm Road UMC. She will be remembered as kind, gentle, cheerful, generous and humble – a true “fruit of the Spirit” Believer and servant of Christ. She attended bible study and served as a church greeter. In addition, she was active in UMW and the Major Way to Faith Circle. She loved children and cooking. She was an avid gardener and talented flower arranger. Surviving are her two daughters, Gloria Oxley of Columbia, Gale Harper (Warren) of Leesburg, Va.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Smarsch (Kenny), Christa Geno (Brian), Jill Miller (Paul), all of Loudoun County, Va.; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and sister, Nita Lindsay (Richard) of Brevard, N.C.; numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Stephanie Oxley. The family wishes to thank the staff of White Oak Manor for their loving care of Mrs. Oxley in her later years.
