Jerry, as she was known to her friends, was a graduate of Union High School and Baptist School of Nursing. Her nursing career spanned six decades, including more than 30 years at Lexington Medical Center, where she was a favorite among doctors and patients alike for her bawdy sense of humor and nurturing bedside manner.
A beloved Mimi to her six grandchildren, Jerry was happiest when she was feeding her family, always pressing more of her delicious home cooking on already-stuffed guests. Jerry and daughter Alice, her companion of 65 years, loved hosting extended family, friends, friends of friends, and “grandpuppies” at their Columbia home. It can be said that Jerry “never met a stranger,” and her seemingly boundless energy, even well into her 90s, and love of life made her a true JOYE to be around.
Jerry was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, J. Edward Joye. She is survived by her brother, Thomas Charles Noland; son, J. Edward Joye Jr. (Liz); daughter, Alice Noland Joye; daughter, Ansley Joye Mitcham (Todd), and grandchildren, Jessica Joye (Alfonso Ugarte), Ted Joye, Emily Joye (Preston Barnes), Ellen Mitcham Taylor (John), Anna Mitcham Singleton (Jesse), and Scott Mitcham.
