
COLUMBIA - A graveside service for Harold Bernard Rittenberg, 91, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2021 in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. There will be a livestream of the service starting at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday on Dunbar Funeral Home – Devine’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/DunbarDevine. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Mr. Rittenberg died Saturday, July 3, 2021. Born in Birmingham, Ala., he was a son of the late Sam and Eva Lee Rittenberg. He was married to Gloria Levy Rittenberg.
In 1950, Harold’s Alabama National Guard unit was called up to serve in the Korean War as front lines infantrymen. While stationed at Fort Jackson, he attended a dance at the old Columbia Hotel where he would meet the love of his life, Gloria Levy. They married after a six-month courtship and Harold joined his bride’s family business when he took over the longtime Columbia store icon, Moe Levy’s. He was a member of Beth Shalom Synagogue in Columbia. After a partial retirement, he and Gloria began to travel and especially enjoyed cruising.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Eileen Rittenberg and son-in-law, Trent Grant; daughter-in-law, Susan Rittenberg; grandson, Miles Rittenberg (Heather); granddaughter, Amanda Greenhill (Geoff); great-granddaughters, Jordan and Mila Greenhill; brother, Jay Rittenberg (Barbara) and their three sons and families; sister, Helene Wolf; niece, Carole Wolf Dansky (Mitch); nephew, Steve Wolf; brother-in-law, Ben Pearlstine; niece, Terri Hodges (Robert); great nephew, Zach Hodges; niece, Susan Balser Berry; nephew, Richard Balser (Van); great niece, Michelle Webb (Douglas Jr.); great niece, Amy Vance (Scott); great-great nephews, Griffen, Tanner, William and Cooper; nephew, Dr. Ira Pearlstine (Amy Smith); great nieces, Marisa Mabry (Mark) and Jenna Pearlstine.
He was predeceased by son, Jerry Rittenberg; father and mother-in-law, Moe and Florence Levy; brothers-in-law, Irving Wolf and Dr. Jacob Leonard Balser; sisters-in-law, Iris Balser and Arlene Pearlstine; nephew-in-law, Dr. Oscar Berry.
