MT. PLEASANT Graveside service for Herbert W. Smith Jr., 93, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2016, in Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia. Mr. Smith died Saturday, May 21, 2016. Born in Whitsett, N.C., he was the son of the late Herbert W. Smith Sr. and Marcille Richardson Smith. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and attended the University of S.C. He retired after 44 years as Executive Director of Warehouse and Transportation with Winn Dixie Grocery Stores. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in White Rock and 32nd degree Mason and member of Morocco Temple in Jacksonville, Fla. He also enjoyed boating and fishing and was an avid Gamecocks fan. Surviving are his sons, Herbert W. Smith III (Chyrol) of Charleston, David Smith (Lisa) of Aiken; grandchildren, Jennifer Powell, Justin Smith, Cory Miller, Haley Miller; great-grandchild, Tate Powell; sister, Joan Geiger of Lugoff. He was predeceased by his wife, Mattie Krantz Smith; two sisters and three brothers. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
