

COLUMBIA James Belford Robey, 81, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2015. The family will greet friends at a celebration of his life from 4 until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. A private family memorial will be held. Born in 1934 in Owensboro, Ky., he was the son of the late Venita Scott Robey and James Belford Robey Sr. A graduate of the University of Denver, Mr. Robey’s professional life was dedicated to a distinguished career in public service. He served as City Manager in Fulton and Henderson, Ky. and Deerfield Beach, Fla. He retired after 16 years of service with the Municipal Association of S.C. A devoted family man, he enjoyed golf, reading and philosophical discussions. He was an active member of the Sierra Club. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jacquelyn Espenlaub Robey; three sons, David Robey (Terri), Phillip Robey (Angie), John Robey (Sue); daughter, Teresa Robey; daughter-in-law, Reneé Robey; seven grandchildren, Heath Jacobs, Jamie Jacobs (Heather), Janelle Kronner (Shawn), James B. Robey III (Kayley), Jacquelyn Robey, David Robey II, Shauna Robey; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Robey. He was predeceased by a son, Eric Robey and a brother, Charles William Robey. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sierra Club, S.C. Chapter, PO Box 2388, Columbia, SC 29202, Senior Resources Inc., 2817 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29205, or a charity of one’s choice.
