

COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Joni Wix Black, of Columbia, S.C. will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, 3926 Devine Street Chapel, Columbia, S.C. Visitation will follow the service at the funeral home. Joni was born November 10, 1955 in Columbia, S.C. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Laverne Wix and Dessie “Dee Dee” Ann Lankford Wix. She started her business career at Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company. She received an Associate’s degree in paralegal studies and worked in the offices of The Isadore Lourie Law Firm followed by the offices of Bolt, Popowski, McCulloch & Strom Law Firm as a paralegal. Joni lived a selfless life, always placing the needs of others ahead of herself. She loved spending time with her family, friends and her canines, Buddy, Peanut and Hershey. She particularly enjoyed large family dinners with as many participants as possible. Joni took great pleasure in cooking these meals and cherished sharing the task with her son. She loved the excitement of dirt bikes, motorcycles, water skiing, snow skiing and skydiving. Joni died on January 1, 2016 at Providence Hospital in Columbia, the same place where she was born, after a courageous year long battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Bryan Anthony Black and son, Hunter Benjamin Black of Columbia, S.C.; brothers, Thomas L. Wix, Jr., Timothy L. Wix, Terry L. Wix and Jack (Crystal) Wix. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family thanks the nursing staff of Hospice Advantage and Providence Hospital for their excellent care during this difficult time.
