COLUMBIA - June Gottlieb Safran peacefully passed away Sunday, January 23, 2022 at the age of 88. June was born on June 27, 1933 in Columbia, South Carolina to the late George S. Gottlieb and Esther Blankfield Gottlieb. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Milton Safran, daughter, Georgy Safran Martin, and younger sister, Claire G. Nezvesky.
June graduated from Dreher High School and attended the University of South Carolina as an Art major. She was a member of Beth Shalom Synagogue and greatly enjoyed attending Friday night Shabbat services for many years. She embraced her heritage as a Jew and fostered a faith in G-d that never wavered.
June passionately followed many South Carolina Gamecock sports programs and was especially devoted to the football and men’s basketball programs, regularly attending games as a longtime season ticket holder. When physical limitations ultimately prevented these trips to the venues, she became a remote spectator who anxiously anticipated every contest.
She cherished time with family, whether traveling with her husband on European buying trips for Safran’s Antiques, attending her children’s activities or adoring her grandchildren as only “Mema” could.
Following her husband’s tragic death, she, with the loving assistance of family, especially her mother and sister, remained selflessly devoted to raising her children to embrace the values she and Milton held dear. June was and remains a blessing to all whose lives she touched.
Survivors include her daughter, Jackie Webb (Sean) and her sons, Andrew N. Safran (Marilyn) and Michael N. Safran (Janet); grandchildren, KD Safran, Alex Safran, Erica Safran, Jenna Safran, Shauna Webb, Landon Martin and Peyton Martin; nieces Jill Carr and Debra Stombler, as well as numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins. They are all thankful for their wonderful memories that will ensure June’s eternal life. The family also appreciates the kindness extended by the Wildwood Downs staff.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday January 26, 2022 at Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery, 720 Blanding Street, Columbia, with Rabbi Jonathan Case and Rabbi Hesh Epstein officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beth Shalom Synagogue, 5827 N. Trenholm Road, Columbia SC 29206.
Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
