

Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel with Reverend C. Alexander “Sandy” McDonald officiating. Full Military Honors and interment will follow at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends and family on Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Manuel was born September 18, 1929 in Jackson, MS, one of four sons to John George and Ida Avarake of Greece. He received a BS from Mississippi State where he served in ROTC. LTC George was the recipient of numerous military awards to include a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He honorably served his country in multiple duty stations around the world for 24 years in the United States Army most notably in both combat zones during Korean Conflict and two tours in Vietnam.
Following his retirement from the Army in 1973 he served as Personnel Director at the South Carolina Department of Social Services, retiring in 1994.
Mr. George’s life was characterized by serving others. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church.
In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his wife, Laura Patterson George, a son, John Manuel George. Survivors include two daughters; Cissy E. George of Lexington, Teresa L. Simkins of Columbia, a son, Robert A. George of West Columbia, three grandchildren, Kristen L. Matthews of Columbia, Alex J. George, Nickolas A. George both of West Columbia, a brother, Alex J. George of Monroe, LA and numerous extended family members.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John Neumann Catholic Church.
