Born in Chester, Virginia, a daughter of Frederick Shoosmith and Mary Sheild Shoosmith, Peggy eventually became known as “Mimi” by everyone in her life, including her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends of every generation.
Mimi attended public schools in Virginia, graduating from Chester High School at the age of 16. She attended Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William & Mary for two years and later attended the University of South Carolina, where she met her future husband, Sabin Nettles.
As a devoted homemaker, she was a fantastic cook, seamstress, and also did needlepoint and knitting. She made each of her children draperies for their 1st home after marrying, and also made all of her 8 grandchildren’s Christmas stockings by needlepoint for their first Christmas. She had a love of cooking, and treated her friends and family to the finest southern dishes, as well as proper English teas, with finger sandwiches and sweet treats. She was known far and wide for her delicious pound cake.
She was a longtime member of St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church where she was a member of Daughters of the King and St. Hilda’s Guild. Eventually, Mimi worked at St. Martin’s Drop-In Nursery, sharing her love for children with all that came into her care. She was also a member of Hyacinth Garden Club.
Mimi’s love for her family was equally matched by her love of all animals, domestic and wild. She adored each of the grand dogs and cats, and they all loved her.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, Richard Sabin Nettles, her brother, Albert J. (Bert) Shoosmith, and sisters, Rose Shoosmith and Frances Shoosmith Otey, and her granddaughter, Courtney Armistead McClary.
She is survived by her children, Dale Nettles McClary (Phil) of Seabrook Island, SC, Mary McCabe Nettles of Pickens, SC, and Richard Sabin Nettles, Jr. (Laura) of Blythewood, SC; her grandchildren, Jay McClary, Scott (Lauren) McClary, Phillip (Maggie) McClary, Patrick (Lisa) McClary, Katie McClary (John Fitzpatrick), Margaret McCabe Rentz, Dustin Nettles, and Brooke Nettles, and her great-grandchildren, Simone and Jasper McClary, Phillip and Jane McClary, Salters and Hugh McClary, Owen and Vivian McClary, Henry Clyburn, and Lyla and Emmy Price.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Three Oaks Hospice for their devoted care over the last four months.
A graveside service will be held for our beloved Mimi on Sunday, January 19, 2025 at 2:00 pm on Greenlawn Memorial Park.
