
COLUMBIA - Mary Joan Robison Poole passed away on September 4, 2018. She was the widow of LTC William Jackson Poole, USA, USMA Class of 1959 and will be interred with him in Arlington National Cemetery. Joan was the daughter of LTC Joseph E. Robison and Mary Deal Few Robison, originally from Atlanta. She was a proud American and was a descendant of the Few family. These included William Few, signer of the U.S. Constitution, Ignatius Few, founder of Emory University and James Few, early martyr of the American revolution with the NC Regulators and hanged by the British.
Joan attended high school in Nurnberg, Germany and graduated from Bradwell Institute in Hinesville, Georgia. She was a graduate of the University of Georgia and a member of Zeta Tau Alpha fraternity. During her years as an Army wife and later, Joan enjoyed many volunteer activities, including Girl and Boy Scouting, the Red Cross, literacy tutoring, Republican Party and ZTA, where she was District President for SC, and held the Honor Ring of the fraternity. She was a former member of Leadership Columbia, the Columbia Chapter of the DAR, First Tuesday Republican Club, and several bridge groups. Family and dear friends were what she valued most in life.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Amanda Moore and son, William Jackson Poole, Jr. and her granddaughters, Mary Amanda Moore and Rebecca Robison Moore.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC. Interment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, September 7, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
