Michael Edward Hoover

Michael Edward Hoover, born on June 5, 1956, in Columbia, South Carolina, passed away on May 15, 2025, at the age of 68. A lifelong resident of Columbia, Michael's journey through life was marked by his passion for journalism, sports, and his unwavering dedication to his family and community.

Michael's early years were spent in Columbia, where he attended WJ Keenan High School, graduating in 1974. It was here that he discovered a profound love for soccer and journalism, two passions that would shape his future. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of South Carolina in 1978. During his time at the university, Michael achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the youngest person ever hired by the sports department at The State newspaper. His talent and enthusiasm for sports journalism were evident, and he made a lasting impact in the field.

As Michael's career evolved, he transitioned from sports journalism to the dynamic world of information technology and network engineering, where he spent the remainder of his professional life. His work in IT demonstrated his adaptability and keen intellect, earning him respect and admiration from colleagues and peers.

Outside of his career, Michael was a devoted lover of sports, with a particular fondness for soccer and skiing. His passion for skiing brought him immense joy, and he often spoke of it as one of the happiest times in his life. Beyond sports, Michael had a deep appreciation for film, music, politics, and literature. He cherished spending time with his friends and family, sharing his vibrant personality and boundless enthusiasm with those around him.

Michael's character was defined by his outgoing, gregarious nature, and his generous and kind spirit. He was known for his intelligence and his ability to engage in discussions on a wide range of topics, always eager to share his knowledge. His kindness and understanding left a lasting impression on everyone he met, and he will be remembered for his willingness to help others.

Predeceased by his parents, Rufus Oscar Hoover and Louise Atkinson Hoover, Michael is survived by his loving wife, Karen Julia Stork Hoover, his son, Brandon Michael Hoover and his grandson, Christopher "Bodie" Hoover. His family meant the world to him, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

A visitation will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Dunbar Funeral Home on Devine Street, followed by a service at 2 PM, also at Dunbar. Michael will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Cemetery Annex.
