Rosemary Price Nance died on Friday, November 14, 2025, surrounded by family, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Gadsden, Alabama, to Thomas Kennon Price, Jr. and Dorothy Sowell Threatt, Rosemary moved to Columbia, South Carolina, at six months old. A gifted and dedicated teacher, she graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts in early childhood education and spent two years as a 6th grade teacher at St. Peter’s Catholic School before moving to E.L. Wright Middle School, where she taught for 32 years—first as a science teacher and later as an instructional technology specialist. During her time there, she was honored as Teacher of the Year in 1990, a reflection of the passion and excellence she brought to her work. She also earned a Master of Education in instructional technology from Lesley University before retiring in 2012.
An avid memory-maker and ambience-creator, Rosemary enjoyed hosting holidays, birthday parties and celebrations of every kind for family and friends, pouring care into every detail in an effort to make each occasion beautiful and memorable for those she loved. She was passionate about her flower garden and took great delight in planting seasonal blooms and perennials on and around the backyard patio—an additional gathering space for decades of joyful, laughter-filled get-togethers. With an especially soft spot for animals, Rosemary cared for countless beloved pets over the years who arguably lived more pampered, comfortable lives than most humans, with special bedding, abundant treats and annual trips to Edisto Island. She was a member and volunteer office assistant at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and served on the board of directors for Sistercare.
Among her many joys, none shone brighter than her two grandchildren, Jack and Quinn, who lovingly called her “MoMo.” Despite enjoying retirement, she swiftly volunteered to homeschool Jack during his kindergarten year, which coincided with the COVID pandemic of 2020. The curriculum was replete with activities that incorporated candy whenever possible, outdoor recess, science experiments and “field trips” to the backyard with scientist and P.E. coach “DD.” There was even a class dog, Boo, who never missed a chance to position herself under the desk for opportunistic tummy rubs and snacks.
Rosemary will be profoundly missed by everyone whose life was brightened by her—through education, through friendship and through the love of family.
She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years; Timothy Hamilton Nance, daughter; Katherine Nance Elliott (John) and beloved grandchildren; John “Jack” Hamilton and Eleanor Quinn, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her father, mother, sister and brother-in-law; Hallie Sue Price Harris (Philip).
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 21, 2025 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 20, 2025, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Final Victory Animal Rescue.
