

Sara Jane Benson Freeman passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community in West Columbia, SC. She was born in 1929, in Batesburg, SC, to Thomas Landrum and Lillian Simpson Benson. She was a 1946 graduate of Dreher High School and went on to earn a master’s degree in Elementary Education. She married Reginald Brumbach Freeman, Jr. in Columbia, SC in 1952.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Lillian Benson Utsey of St. George, SC, her brother, Thomas Landrum Benson, Jr. of St. Louis, MO, and her sister, Ruth Benson Hutchinson of Cumming, GA. She is survived by her children Michael Benson Freeman (Joanie), Richard Myers Freeman (Denise), Jane Simpson Freeman, and Amy Freeman Wilson (Ben), seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Sara was tirelessly devoted to her family and friends. She enjoyed a career in Elementary Education. She had a passion for flowers and was an avid gardener. As a lifetime member of Shandon Presbyterian Church, she sang in the choir, played handbells, served as an Elder and Deacon, and coordinated Meals on Wheels for over 20 years. Sara lived life to the fullest, serving her church and community through numerous volunteer activities. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, the Columbia Choral Society, Shandon Presbyterian Church’s Circle #3, and volunteered for many years with Habitat for Humanity.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2024 at Shandon Presbyterian Church, with a reception following the service at the church.
