Sara Lawton Roof

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Richard Roof; her daughters, Elizabeth Bonner Kemper and Virginia Bonner; her grandchildren, Maya Kemper, Olivia Kemper and Daniel Bonner-Spence; and her sisters, Martha Brooks and Frances Wood. She is also survived by many stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the Roof extended family. She was predeceased by her brothers, Boyce Mendenhall Lawton and Herbert Lawton.

Sara was born in Ridgeland, SC on June 5, 1946. She moved to Florida as a teen and attended North Miami High School, followed by the University of South Florida. She lived in the Tampa area for several years before moving to western NC in 1980, first to Bryson City and then to Asheville (Arden) in 1986.

She was a registered nurse, working as a circulating nurse in the OR at St. Joseph’s Hospital for many years. Sara enjoyed and was accomplished in sewing, piano and painting, but her true passion was in gardening and along with Richard, in creating an oasis of a yard and home. She especially loved the mountains of western North Carolina, which gave her much comfort and joy over the years.

The funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Columbia, SC on Sunday, January 12, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be in the church Fellowship Hall at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.
