Mrs. Cubelic died Tuesday, April 7, 2026. Born March 5, 1924 in Pittsburgh, PA, she was a daughter of the late John Petok and Victoria Chernicky Petok, immigrants from Czechoslovakia. Sylvia graduated from West View High School in 1942 where she played basketball.
Sylvia married Thomas William Cubelic in 1946 and spent the next 70 years with the love of her life. Sylvia met Tom at North Park Lodge in Pittsburgh when he asked her to dance. For the rest of their lives they danced, bowled, golfed and watched their children and grandchildren compete in various sports. She was an avid sports fan.
Sylvia worked for the Wildwood Coal Mine as an administrative assistant. After their first child was born, she decided to become a full-time mom! She loved family dinners, ping pong challenges, holidays and time together with family. She especially cherished visits with extended family from all around the country.
Sylvia was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she was active in the women’s guild society and respite care ministry. She was kind beyond measure and welcomed anyone to the dinner table.
Surviving are her sons, Thomas Cubelic (Cathy) and John Cubelic; daughter, Mary Anne Grant (David); grandchildren, Cole (Katherine), Brie, John Cubelic, Barette and Connor (Alexa) Grant; and great-grandchildren Kit, Judge, and Locke Cubelic.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Thomas William Cubelic, brother John Petok, and sister Mary Lou Newsome.
The family wishes to thank The Palmettos of Parklane for their loving care and friendship over the years and Pathway Hospice.
