Andy was born on June 19, 1951, in Red Bank, NJ, the son of Andrew C. and Frances (Muth) Scala. In 1974, he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from the University of New Haven, where he was a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society. He then went on to graduate from the Yale University School of Medicine Physician Assistant (PA) Program in 1976, a proud Eli if there ever was one. Andy worked at the University of Chicago Medical Center’s Burn Unit from 1976 to 1978, when he moved his career and family to New Hampshire.
After working at Concord Hospital’s Emergency Department, Andy joined Concord Orthopaedics in 1988, specializing in spine care and surgery for over 20 years. He is the past President of the New Hampshire Society of Physician Associates, and he was the PA Advisor to the NH Board of Registration in Medicine. He also was a founding member of the nationwide Physician Assistant History Society. Andy loved to teach, and he enjoyed returning to Yale in his retirement, delivering alumni lectures on the history of the PA profession to the next generation of Physician Assistants.
A proud Italian-American from New Jersey, Andy was known for his big personality and deep love of his family. For Andy, family always came first. On September 23, 1978, he married the love of his life, Maureen Hannon of Saratoga Springs, NY. On July 23, 1982, he proudly delivered his beloved daughter, Courtney. He enthusiastically welcomed his son-in-law, Zachary, into the family in 2013, and was over the moon when his darling granddaughter, Isabella (“Izzy”) was born on February 23, 2025. Anyone who knew Andy knew how much he loved his family.
Andy also was an avid golfer and student of the game: he loved to play, study the rules, and read about the history of golf. He was a member at The Course at Yale, where he was a four-time winner of the William S. Beinecke Tournament with Maureen as his partner. He loved to ski, travel, and spend time with his wife and daughter. A lifelong learner, Andy loved to visit history museums, and he read voraciously, especially biographies because he always wanted to know what made people tick. And he was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees, Green Bay Packers, and Frank Sinatra.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Frances Scala. Andy is survived by his loving wife, Maureen of Hooksett, NH; daughter, Courtney Scala Smith, son-in-law, Dr. Zachary Smith, and granddaughter, Isabella of Durham, NC; sister, Cindy Scala of Winston-Salem, NC; sister, Patricia Kruse of Myrtle Beach, SC; and sister, Pam Sessock of Bomoseen, VT; as well as many beloved friends. Everyone who had the privilege of knowing Andy is better off for his presence in their lives. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
A visitation will be held at Bennett Funeral Home, located at 209 N. Main St., Concord, NH, 03301, on December 30, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A chapel service will follow at the same venue on December 31, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, Andy’s family asks that you consider a memorial donation to The Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation (uveitis.org), an organization he cared deeply for.
