Gerald (Gerry) L. Hamilton, MD, 71 died Sunday, August 21, 2011 after a sudden illness.
Born in Cooperstown, NY, he was the son of Maurice P. and Irene M. (Weber) Hamilton.
Dr. Hamilton received his undergraduate degree at Hamilton College in Colgate, NY. He received his medical degree at Columbia Presbyterian College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, NY. He interned at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY.
After graduating medical school, Dr. Hamilton served two years as an OB-GYN in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Plattsburgh Air Force Base in New York and Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.
After his service in the Air Force, he began practicing obstetrics and gynecology at the Concord Clinic, where he worked from 1974-1979. In 1979 he opened his own practice with his wife, Certified Nurse Midwife Christine Kuhlman, where he practiced until his retirement in 2000. Throughout his years of active practice, he always honored the obstetrical and gynecological needs of all of his patients.
He was the only obstetrician invited by President Reagan to accompany the nurse-midwifery delegation on a People to People obstetrical mission to China.
Dr. Hamilton was the owner of New Hampshire’s first independent birthing center. During his retirement he served as the Board Chair of the Concord Feminist Health Center.
He was known for his “wicked” sense of humor.
He enjoyed coin collecting, kayaking and sports of all kinds. He enjoyed comic books and collecting fossils.
Survivors include his wife Christine Kuhlman-Hamilton, ND, CNM of Concord; his son Christopher Ian Hamilton currently residing in St. Petersburg, Russia; and his brother Maurice Bruce Hamilton of Mesa, AZ.
A calling hour will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2011 from 6p-7p at the Bennett Funeral Home 3 Church Street Chapel (the Brick Building) in Concord. A celebration of his life will be held at 7pm.
