John Henry Porter Jr.

Jack was born in Bedford, MA to John H. and Helen Porter on October 1, 1938. He spent a significant part of his childhood on Lake Winnipesaukee, exploring and loving the lake. For the past 20 years he and his wife of 44 years, Louisa, have lived on the Lake in Moultonborough.

After graduation from Concord (MA) High School, Jack received a B.S. degree in 1961 from Rochester Institute of Technology. He was a Lieutenant in US Navy from 1961-1965, serving as navigator on the USS Nantahala in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Northern Europe.

After leaving the Navy, Jack worked for Courier Citizen Corp., of Walpole, MA, Alexander Proudfoot Corp. of Chicago, IL, and later as VP of Industrial Relations for Rumford Press, in Concord, NH. In 1979, he started the Johnson & Porter Insurance Agency in Contoocook, NH. In 1997, he sold the agency to USI New England, joining the company as a vice president.

Jack was committed to community service throughout his life. He was a founding member and past President of the Hopkinton Rotary Club. He served as the President of the Independent Insurance Agents of NH, and was a member of numerous boards including the NH Business Finance Authority; the Capital Region Food Program; Concord Regional Development Corp., Concord Chamber of Commerce, Consumer Credit Counseling Service, the First Colebrook Bank, the Hopkinton School Board; the Business and Industry Association of New Hampshire; the People’s Center; the Merrimack County Job Training Council, and the American Red Cross. He was a trustee of trust funds for the Town of Moultonborough, NH.

Jack leaves behind his wife Louisa, his two children and their spouses; son, Mark Gilman and wife, Victoria; daughter, Brenda and her husband, Terry and four beloved grandchildren Jessica and Nolan Quinn, Madison and Bailey Gilman, and his two brothers, Richard and Robert Porter and their families.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 300 NH Route 25, in Meredith, NH, 03253, on November 19, 2016, at 11:00 AM. Interment service and military honors will take place on Sunday, November 20, 2016, at 1:00pm in the Contoocook Village Cemetery, Contoocook, NH.
