Peter was born on June 18, 1958, in Plainfield, NJ. He earned a B.A. in Economics at the University of New Hampshire, and subsequently owned and operated his own painting contractor business, New Hampshire Painting, for 40 years. Peter loved working for himself and the freedom it afforded him to raise his kids and be with his family.
Peter was an avid hiker and summited all 48 4,000-footers in NH, many multiple times. He also ran seven marathons, including the Boston Marathon four times. Above all, Peter will be remembered for his quick humor. He always looked to make people smile, or groan, no matter the situation. He kept his wit until the very end, making us laugh together while we cried.
Throughout his illness, Peter’s family ensured he never spent a moment alone, sometimes to his great annoyance. His favorite foods were mac and cheese and chocolate ice cream, which were happily provided at all hours of the day.
Peter leaves behind his wife Holly Kimball; his children Sarah (Tom) Gregory, Megan (Addison Bigelow) Kimball Rhines, and Cooper Kimball-Rhines; his grandchildren Isabella and Olivia Gregory; his five siblings: Rosemary (Steve Worley) Berwald, Rebecca Huckabay, William (Linda) Rhines Jr., Ann (Fernando) Corrales, and Mark (Elizabeth) Rhines; many nieces and nephews and their children; and his beloved cat, “Bean.” Peter is predeceased by his parents, William and Joanne Rhines, and his brother-in-law, George Huckabay.
The family is forever grateful for the excellent care Peter received at the Granite VNA Hospice House, whose nurses, LNAs, and volunteers allowed us to spend our final days together just as his family, not his doctors. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 354 Main St., Hopkinton, NH on November 18th at 11:00am, followed by a gathering. The family requests that donations be made in lieu of flowers to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, Annual Fund, at www.forestsociety.org, with Peter Rhines as Tribute.
