Sigrid passed away on February 12, 2018. Born on May 30, 1935 in Tallinn, Estonia, Sigrid and her family spent World War II as refugees in Vienna and then, still as refugees, went to Argentina after the war. It was on a trip to Uruguay where she met her future husband, Luis G. Maldonado. They married in 1959. In 1966 they came to the United States. Earning her United States citizenship was one of the proudest achievements of her life.
Sigrid studied dentistry in university and had a dental practice for several years before coming to America. She lived in the San Francisco Bay Area before coming to New Hampshire in 1970, where she has lived in Bedford and in Dunbarton.
Sigrid was a passionate genealogical researcher who loved to share her family story. She published two books regarding the genealogy of her family and ideas for others researching their own Eastern European family roots.
She was a staunch supporter of human rights and social justice causes, with a particular interest in helping those who lost their homes due to war or other large-scale social upheavals. Having been a refugee herself, she became very involved in helping settle refugees from Vietnam. Just as she had received aid from strangers after World War II, she made sure to give back and help those from Vietnam who had come to America. She remained committed to refugee causes throughout her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Southern Poverty Law Center at, https://donate.splcenter.org/sslpage.aspx?pid=1367
