

Charles Edgar Shook Jr., age 91, of Hickory, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at Lutheran Home West in Hickory. He was the son of the late Charles Edgar Shook Sr. and Annie Bowman Shook. Mr. Shook was a member of Penelope Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Navy. He owned and operated Superior Dry Cleaners until at age 40 he was inclined to further his education. Charles attended Lenoir Rhyne University and then received his Masters Degree in Education from Appalachian University. Charles then taught 6th grade at Viewmont Elementary and later at Grandview Elementary. He was an artist, taught calligraphy, and was an Avon Representative for years. He worked at Webbs Superette to help his daughter and her husband’s family business. After his retirement he worked at Epps Printing for 20 years until he was age 85. Charles was a proud member of the American Legion and an advocate for multiple charities and organizations. He enjoyed traveling, music and gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary Smith Shook; brothers, Arthur H. Shook, Brittain E. Shook, Harold Calvin Shook; sisters, Grace Burrus Morrow, and Winnie Charles Pope.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Tamara Shook Hadnott of Hickory; sister, Mary Shook Coffey Dellinger Caze of Charlotte; grandchildren, Tracie Hadnott of Hickory, and Adam Hadnott and his wife Suravadee “Daow,” of Seattle, WA; great-grandchildren, Emily Hadnott, Tia Hadnott, Allan Clark, Asher Hadnott, Paige Hadnott; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Service of Remembrance of will be held on Sunday, March 17, 2013 in the chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Conover at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Joe Dillard officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park with Military Rites conducted by American Legion Post #48.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 16, 2013 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Drum Funeral Home in Conover.
Following the Service on Sunday, the family will gather to greet friends in the 2nd floor Meeting Room at Woodland Manor, 1790 3rd Avenue NW, Hickory, NC 28601.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.
