Jack was born on Thursday, April 14, 1927 to the late Joseph Claude Whitener and Antha Lillian Wilkinson Whitener.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by wife of 74 years, Margie Brown Whitener; sister, Mary Frances “Bobbie” Whisnant and husband Harry Whisnant; brothers, Joe Whitener, William “Bill” Whitener and wife Jeanette; and infant twin granddaughters, Carla Whitener Brown, Marla Jacquelyn Brown.
Jack served in the US Navy as a Seaman First Class V6 USNR in the Asia-Pacific theatre during WWII. Jack was the recipient of the American Area Medal, Victory Medal World War II, and Asiatic-Pacific medal. Jack retired from HTB Furniture where he worked as an office manager. He was a lifetime member of The American Legion. He also was a member of the Riverside Masonic Lodge #606, Oasis Shriner’s Temple, and Claremont Lion’s Club. Jack was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Claremont, where he also served in the church men’s group. Jack enjoyed model trains and gardening as his hobbies. He was well known for the custom made railroad spikes he gave to family, friends, businesses and charities, decorated with miniature train cars attached to train tracks.
Those left to cherish Jack’s memory are daughter, Jill Whitener Brown and husband Doug Brown; grandchildren, City of Claremont Mayor Shawn R. Brown and wife Hope, Patrick S. Brown and wife Brittany; sisters, Rebecca Ramsey, Libby Connor; great grandson, Jackson R. Brown, great granddaughter, Peyton R. Brown; step great grandsons Sky, Kendall, & Cole Hayes; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with military honors for Jack will be held at 11am on Monday, March 25, 2024 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Cemetery in Claremont with Reverend William Hollar officiating.
