

Born May 12, 1926 in Maiden, North Carolina, he was the son of the late John Henderson Huitt and Margaret Elizabeth Murdock Huitt Underwood.
John worked as a finishing carpenter in general construction. He worked on the Mostellar Mansion, Marshall Steam Plant, Abernethy Laurels and the moulding at Catawba Hospital.
He served his country in World War II in the 113th Navy Seebees. He enjoyed word search and was an avid reader of history. He was also a member at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his spouse of 35 years, Margaret V. Huitt; sons, Eddie Shook and Bobby Shook; a brother, Bill Ray Huitt; and sisters, Peggy Cole, Frances Chapman and Phyllis Laramore.
Those left to cherish his memory are daughters, Sandra Sigmon of Conover, Carla Hafer of Conover, Mary-Ann Bandy and husband, Dwight of Newton, Pat Cline and husband, Howard of Maiden, Sandra Miller and husband Doug of Claremont; sons, Floyd W. Shook of Hickory, Ricky Shook and wife, Melissa of Newton, sisters, Olmeito Stewart of Newton and Maxine Easter of South Carolina; as well as 23 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2017 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Claremont officiated by Rev. George Simmons. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658 or Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Parking Lot fund, 3180 W. Main Street, Claremont, NC 28610.
