

Larry L. Brittain, 74, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 after a long battle with cancer (Multiple Myeloma). He was born in Hickory, NC on March 1, 1940 to the late R.C. and Christine Brittain of Claremont, NC. He and his loving wife of 55 years, Judy Kiziah Brittain, lived in Charlotte, NC for 33 years before spending their retirement in both Las Vegas, NV and Conover, NC. Larry was both a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Las Vegas, NV and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Conover, NC. While living in Charlotte, NC, Larry was a long-time member of Ascension Lutheran Church where he served the church in many capacities.
Larry graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1958, where he was highly involved in civic activities. He graduated from Bowling Green College of Commerce in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in both Accounting and Business Administration. His career as a CPA and financial specialist began in Charlotte, NC at one of the big eight public accounting firms, Ernst & Ernst, where he became a manager of the tax department. After eight years at Ernst & Ernst, Larry opened his own accounting firm in Charlotte in 1971, which continued as Brittain, Dean & Barger, PA, where he served as President, Vice President, and Chairman of the Board until December 2007. He became well-known in Charlotte for his expertise as a CPA, representing his clients before the IRS, and he was admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court in 1975.
During his career, Larry thrived on continual education and, in addition to being a CPA, he also became a Certified Financial Planner, Certified Commercial Investment Member, Chartered Life Underwriter, Chartered Financial Consultant, Certified Senior Advisor, and a Real Estate Broker in both North Carolina and Nevada. Over the years, he served as President of the Charlotte Chapter of CPAs, President of the Charlotte Estate Planning Council, and President of the National Association of Accountants. He also became involved in politics, serving as the Treasurer of the campaigns of Governor James G. Martin, and accepting his appointment as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the NC State Port Authority.
Larry is survived by his wife, Judy Kiziah Brittain; his son, Greg Brittain and wife Stacy of Billings, MT; his daughter, Julie Brittain Spears of Mooresville, NC; and four grandchildren, Brittany, Larson, and Sutton Spears, all of Mooresville, NC and Shayla Brittain of Billings, MT. He is also survived by three brothers, Steve Brittain, Mike Brittain and wife Rita, of Claremont, NC, and Max Brittain and wife Susie of Commack, NY; as well as one sister, Gwen Eaton of Raleigh, NC. We are extremely proud to call him husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be greatly missed by all.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Conover. Rev. Scott Johnson and Rev. Anton Lagoutine will officiate and burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. on Saturday at the church.
