Teresa Bailey Gilchrist of Conover, North Carolina, fulfilled her long-standing mantra to “finish well” on March 8, 2026. Surrounded by the love of her family, she peacefully slipped into the arms of her Savior.
Teresa was born in Dunn, North Carolina, to Glenard and Sonja Muszalik Bailey and was raised in Baileys Crossroads, an idyllic farm community surrounded by a large and loving extended family. It was only a short walk for Teresa and her sister, Lucinda, to their beloved grandparents’ home, where the two were frequent visitors—and occasional partners in mischief.
Throughout her 78 years, Teresa was known for her gracious spirit and thoughtful approach to life. Beneath her soft-spoken demeanor was an iron determination and a quiet but fierce competitiveness—qualities that shone on the basketball and tennis courts. A gifted athlete, she won four adult state doubles championships in tennis. An insatiable learner, Teresa earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and later a Master’s degree in Library Science, graduating with honors. She went on to serve as an elementary school librarian for 15 years, nurturing in her students the same lifelong love of reading that shaped her own life. Once Teresa set her mind to a goal, there was no quit in her—it would be done, and done well.
Teresa and her high school sweetheart, Jeff, shared 60 years of marriage. Together they raised two daughters, Lynne (Kip) Place of Hickory, North Carolina, and Jill (Chris) Sinegar of Chapin, South Carolina. Her family depended on her wisdom, steady encouragement, and unwavering advocacy. Her grandchildren—Tanner and Dawson Place, and Caroline and Adele Sinegar—were her greatest joy, and she enthusiastically supported their many activities. Her life was rich with purpose, travel, laughter, and countless cherished memories.
Deeply rooted in her faith, Teresa served as an Elder at Corinth Reformed Church in Hickory, led Bible Study Fellowship groups, and was a member of the church’s handbell choir. She also shared her expertise by helping expand the church library. Words and learning were lifelong passions. Teresa was a voracious reader who often had several books going at once, a gifted writer and editor, and an exceptional crossword puzzle solver. Ever willing to embrace a new challenge, she even learned accounting in retirement in order to assist with the family business.
In addition to her husband and daughters, Teresa is survived by her sister, Lucinda Bailey of Raleigh, North Carolina, along with many beloved cousins, brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. Her family is deeply grateful for the caregivers, friends, and neighbors who enriched her life and provided support and companionship over the past five years.
A memorial service will be held at Corinth Reformed Church in Hickory, NC Friday, March 13, 2026. The family will receive friends at 2:00 p.m., with the service to follow at 3:00 p.m.
