Born March 18, 1948, David Alan Dabney, son of the late George and Jonnie Dell Dabney, passed on to his eternal home. David was the middle child and only son. With older sister, Sharon, and younger sister, Dian, the trio continued a long history as residents of Conroe, Texas. After graduating from Conroe High and Sam Houston University, David first worked for Goodyear Tire learning the aspects of running a small business. From there he began working in the family business, Simpson-Dabney Appliances. With his knowledge and experience, he was able to continue the success for 60 more years until he retired in 2022.
David met the love of his life, Rheta Davis, shortly after his high school graduation. He knew she was the one for him and asked her to be his wife while she was still in high school. Because she was still in school, she only wore her engagement ring after graduation. On August 6, 1971, David and Rheta were married at the First Baptist Church. During their 53 years of marriage, three children were born, Rebecca Mathews (Albert), Sarah Dabney, and Daniel Dabney (Bobbi). Adding to the family were grandchildren Elena and Roslyn Mathews, Charlie Peters, Parker, Addi, and Lincoln Dabney.
David served in many capacities with the Conroe Area Girls Softball Association. Beginning with coaching all age groups, he then served on the board of the association for 25 plus years. He demonstrated his love for the game and the girls playing by continuing as the grounds keeper when the new complex opened. His hard work resulted in the league growing. In 2003, Montgomery County Commissioners Court named the softball facilities of the new park Dabney Fields. This honor was an event that meant so much to him.
David was a Christian man of great faith. His church membership was most important to him. The friends he made through the church were an integral part of his life. Whether worshiping together or dining out, he cherished his time spent with them.
After a lengthy illness, David joined his heavenly family on August 28, 2024. Besides his children and grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends will gather at Cashner Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 2, 2024 from 5:00-7:00 P.M.
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at 10:00 A.M.
Serving as pallbearers will be Kenny Rumbaugh, John Parsley, Mike Norton, John Archer, Delbert Johnson, and Paul Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Ken Young and Jeff Russell.
The family would like to thank all the staff at HCA Conroe and Drs. Fernandez, Kleinbaum, Shilling and Robbins for the care you each gave David these last few months. A special thank you to Angela, Carolyn, and Phil in the rehab department. You were very special to both me and David.
