Edward Wellington Myers

Edward Wellington Myers aka Ed, Eddie, of Conroe, TX passed away on February 8th at HCA Houston Healthcare Medical Center after an eight-week battle with Covid. He was born May 29, 1953 to Wellington Zigler Myers and Margaret Cree Work Gillis in Washington DC.

Ed is survived by his wife, Sandra, his children Edward W. Myers II (Jaime E.), Michael D. Myers, Lindsay J. Proske (Joey G.), step-children Christopher A. Reynolds (Becka) and Amanda M. Jones (Taylor), brother Ronald E. Myers (Margaret Y.), sister Marilyn M. Cochet, nephews Mathieu C. Cochet (Veronika), Parrish Myers (Marliese), Jeffry C Myers (Jennie), nieces Daniela E. Myers, Madeleine D. Cochet (Yousaf) and grandkids Madilynn N. Myers, Locklyn J. Proske, Layla B. Proske, Dalton R. Pulliam, Brea E. Pulliam and Hunter A. Proske.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents Wellington Z. Myers and Margaret C. W. Myers, brother Richard E. Myers and brother-in-law Philippe Cochet.

Ed was born in Washington DC and enjoyed his early years there before moving to Morristown NJ at 14. He graduated from Morristown High School in 1971. It was here he met his lifelong best friend and guy soul mate Victor Luaces. Ed, or Eddie to Victor, enjoyed telling many vivid and varying stories of those high school years together.

Ed was recruited by several colleges to play football but he ultimately and proudly accepted a full ride scholarship to Penn State. It was Joe Paterno himself that recruited him. Due to an injury during training, Ed was never able to play, but Joe Pa still made sure Ed was able to keep his scholarship for the full four years.

Upon graduating from Penn State with a major in Psychology and a minor in Sociology, Ed moved to Philadelphia, PA to attend Temple University for a Masters in Hospital Administration. His career as an Administrator brought him to multiple states and cities.

He began his career as an Assistant Administrator in Rock Springs, WY. Steve Sanders recruited him to Houston, TX in 1983 where he began as an Assistant Administrator for Memorial Southeast and was part of the team that relocated the hospital to its current location. In Ed’s tenure at Memorial he served as CEO for Memorial Northwest, Southwest. After Southwest, he moved to HCA and became CEO of Conroe Regional Medical Center. He left Conroe to become the President and CEO of CHRISTUS Health Southeast Texas. From there he moved to Tucson, AZ to be the CEO of Carondelet. He left Carondelet to become CEO of two Iasis Hospitals in Phoenix, AZ. Ed joined the Shriner Hospital system in 2015 and moved to Philadelphia to be the CEO of The Shriner Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Working for the Shriner’s was very rewarding as their mission was all about the children, not the bottom line. In February 2020, he was offered the position of Senior Corporate Administrator and was told he could live wherever he wished. This is how he and Sandra ended up back in Texas.

Ed had been a Mason since 1983 and chose to become a Shriner while living in Philadelphia. The Shriners were thrilled to have the first Administrator that played golf and was active in the Shrine Temple.

Ed met his wife Sandra in Beaumont, TX before moving to Tucson. She joined him in 2008 and they married in Phoenix, AZ on November 19, 2009.

Ed and Sandra enjoyed spending time with their friends and family, especially the grandkids. Ed also enjoyed mountain biking, hiking, golf, sitting outside while grilling or smoking meat, pheasant hunting and fishing. Ed along with Sandra, also enjoyed traveling, kayaking and meeting up with friends in Center City Philadelphia and NYC where they discovered many new places to enjoy a beverage or two. ie: pub crawling.

Ed also enjoyed earlier years with his kids and friends spending time at Jamaica Beach, Galveston. Many stories have been told of those years and the fun they had and the trouble they got into. Another name that Ed went by, also his most favorite, was PopPop. As a Dad he was fairly strict, always making sure his children were raised to be the best, but once he became a grandfather everything went out the window. He would constantly give them extra sweets or prizes and couldn’t say no when they would say his name or beg him to do something with him. He would smile and shrug his shoulders in a sappy way and fulfill their every wish. He took them on so many walks and golf cart rides to feed the ducks, search for wildlife, play in the water and make messes. He was a fantastic PopPop and will live on in the hearts of all his grandchildren.

Ed had planned on retiring in May 2023. Ed and Sandra chose Conroe, TX to be their place of retirement. Most of their family and some friends were in the Beaumont, Houston, Conroe area. They were looking forward to getting back here to be close to them. In March of 2018, they found a new 55+ development on Lake Conroe and decided to go ahead and build their future retirement home which would be used as a second home until retirement. They closed on the house in December 2019. He was then offered the corporate position and Ed and Sandra happily moved to Conroe on March 29, 2020. There, despite Covid, they enjoyed time spent with family. They made new friends in their new neighborhood and enjoyed almost daily golf cart rides to the lake to watch the sunset.
