Un abrazo fuerte para ti prima, y otro enorme para el buen Ernesto hasta el cielo…al rato lo alcanzamos.  (A big hug for you, cousin, and another huge one for the good Ernesto up to heaven ... after a while we will be with him.)


My uncle passed away this past week, and I don’t have too many fond memories of uncles on my dad’s side of the family, but I can honestly say that my Uncle Ernie was one that always stuck out to me.  I never saw this man lose his temper or be ugly.  Just always with a smile and kind words or a good joke.  If you were there this weekend at his memorial there was a word that just kept being used over and over, “Love.”  

Anyone that spent more than 5 minutes around him could tell how much love he had in his heart, for his wife, for his children, his grandchildren, and his siblings.  Even though the circumstances were bad, this weekend, I really loved seeing family that I hadn’t seen in 20 years it seems and leave it to my uncle Ernie to make that happen.  

My dad turned 71 on Saturday, the day he also had to say goodbye to his little brother, and when we sang to him, he looked at me and said, “it doesn’t feel right.”  I know the type of man my uncle was and I’m sure he was right next to him singing along with all of us.  I want to say I’m terribly sorry to my Aunt Martha, my cousins and all my aunts and uncles that lost a huge piece of their heart a week ago, but I believe with everything in me that this man is in a way better place than this now, so I’m happy for him.

If we all can be half the man Tio was, us Lucas men will have had a great life.  

I don’t think a lot of people understand what it’s like to have a family as large as ours.  It’s so unique in that live is spread far and wide, and tragic in that connections are easily lost because of distance and growth.  I don’t have a lot of memories with each aunt and uncle, but Tio Ernest was luckily my godfather, and I’m so grateful to have had special childhood memories with him that stuck out among the rest as well.  He’ll be dearly missed.  

I’m here to celebrate a life well lived.  A man loved by many…and respected and liked by all.  A man who could probably befriend a skunk and make all love the skunk because he cared to see passed the stink.  Legendary – and he was my kin.  I miss him and his beautiful smile.  Although I had not seen him…his last years…months or days…I loved hi.  My fondest memory was of him holding my hand at my Wuela’s table and saying “Mina…it’s okay to be angry…but let someone oin you.  And if you ge lot…let my hand remind you that someone still cares…and find your way back to better times,” they will come.  Thank You, Tio.  
My heart breaks for another example of why we need to make time for all things.  Family is important.  I stand and honor him.  I stand and praise God for giving us an opportunity to know him and merely be a part of this whole.  I know heaven is a lot more glorious with you, my dad, grandparents and the lineage that gathered to welcome you home.  We will see you later, our Beloved Uncle.


We are CELERATING him and his AWESOMENESS!  I closed my eyes and could hear him singing and I was watching him twirling around in dance as well.  I could clearly in my mind envision it all be and it made it all so very, very lovely.  The tough part is us being selfish because we want it so badly and we can’t have him in the flesh but the big ol’ mark he left in our soul, that’s our forever!  He made sure of that!  And topped it off with a scoop of some Rocky Road!! I love you and I’m thinking of you and the kids and praying for you always.


I’m sorry I missed the funeral today.  He was a dear uncle to me.  Some things are engraved in your mind forever, often through music.  It was late one evening I Leadville, Colorado when Tio Ernesto was living with us, I presume to babysit for a while.  In his kind and gentle way, he was trying to get us to go to sleep when he put this song (“Knock Three Times” by Tony Orland and Dawn) on the radio…a moment I will forever remember. Our hearts are heavy this morning for the Lucas Familia R.I.P. Tio Ernesto. 

I was glad I was able to talk to him for a brief moment. about 2 weeks ago I went to visit my parents to let my dad know what was going on with him and right away my dad called him. Tio was at home and when I heard his voice I hadn’t realized how long it had been I had not heard his vice. I’m going to have to say it’s been a few years, but let me tell you, when I did it brought back so many memories of my childhood. 

It was awesome and my tio has a very unique sound to his voice as do all my tios but something about my Tio Ernesto. His voice is so calming. You hear his voice and you feel peace. It’s unexplainable. 

I Love You, Tio.

Every one of us has our unwritten story. We never really know when ours ends. . In the end, we all want to be the hero, the good guy, the nice one. With my whole heart, I can say my uncle was. He was a kind man that loved, laughed, and lived a beautiful life alongside his family and God. My heart goes out to my Tia Martha and my cousins during this difficult time. There are no words of comfort to heal the pain in your hearts; however, do know that Tio Ernesto wrote his story so honorably and leaves this world so loved and respected. I will miss you tio. I love you.

I am heartbroken for all of you.  You know how much I can relate to this, and it breaks my heart for you, but also makes me happy for you..happy because you had the privilege of sharing your music ministry with him and no, you know he’s with you in spirit because it was a connections you shared.   I’ve prayed for you guys all day.  The boys and I pray for you every night.  You are constantly in my thoughts.  He’s just preparing a way for his family and one day, you’ll meet again.  Love you guys.


Ernesto was such a good man who truly loved his family.  How blessed you are Martha to have had such a wonderful Love, Husband and Father to your children.  I’m so glad that I told him what a wonderful husband and father he was the last time I saw him.  May he rest in the arms of our loving Savior.  Until you meet again.    

Woke up hoping it wasn’t real. Biggest and best advice he taught; unconditional love, forgiveness, humility, family is everything, laugh always, good music is important, and coffee. Robert is the father and husband he is because of his guidance and love. He continues to be part of our everything.  Sending love and light. Tio touched so many. Robert is receiving calls from different people that worked with him throughout the years. They send their condolences to the family. He was loved, admired, and respected by so many. The impact he had on so many…there are no words really. He was the greatest man I have ever known. We miss hearing his laugh.

So sorry, Tia.  May beautiful memories bring you peace during this difficult time.  So sorry for your loss.  I’m here for you always.
